Rwanda–Mozambique Security Cooperation Marked at Cabo Delgado Police Anniversary

The Rwanda Security Force (RSF), alongside the Mozambican Police and local authorities in Cabo Delgado Province, on Saturday commemorated the 51st anniversary of the Mozambican National Police (PRM) in a display of continued security cooperation between the two countries.

The anniversary events were held across the districts of Macomia, Palma, and Mocímboa da Praia, areas that have been heavily affected by insurgent violence over the past several years.

During the celebrations, district authorities praised the RSF for what they described as a strong gesture of solidarity and partnership with Mozambique’s security institutions and local communities.

Mozambican local leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation with Rwandan forces in ongoing joint efforts aimed at preserving peace, security, and stability throughout Cabo Delgado Province.

Rwanda deployed troops and police personnel to Mozambique in July 2021 at the request of the Mozambican government to help combat Islamist-linked insurgents operating in Cabo Delgado. Since then, Rwandan forces have played a key role in recapturing strategic towns, securing infrastructure, and restoring relative stability in several parts of the province.

The districts of Palma and Mocímboa da Praia were among the hardest hit during the insurgency, which displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians and disrupted major natural gas projects worth billions of dollars.

Security cooperation between Rwanda and Mozambique has since expanded beyond military operations to include policing, community engagement, and stabilization initiatives aimed at supporting the return of displaced residents and rebuilding local governance structures.

Officials from both countries have repeatedly emphasized that sustained collaboration remains essential to preventing the resurgence of insurgent activity and ensuring long-term peace in northern Mozambique.
