Special Operatives Raid Former Ugandan Speaker Of Parliament, Deepening Rift Within Uganda’s Political Establishment

This Saturday afternoon, a joint security operation led by Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), backed by the Uganda People’s Defence Force and other security agencies, has raided the residence of a former senior parliamentary figure as part of an expanding corruption investigation into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.

The operation, according to local press, marks one of the most high-profile anti-corruption actions involving a senior political insider in recent years and is already fueling debate over shifting power dynamics within Uganda’s ruling establishment.

Investigators are reportedly examining property holdings, financial transactions, and suspected accumulation of wealth believed to be inconsistent with officially known sources of income. Security teams are also believed to have sought documents, electronic devices, and records linked to the ongoing probe.

The former parliamentary leader had for years been regarded as one of the most influential figures within Uganda’s political system and a key ally of Yoweri Museveni.

Her rise to national prominence was closely associated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), where she played a central role in advancing government legislative priorities and consolidating support within Parliament.

Political observers, however, say relations between the former Speaker and sections of the ruling establishment have appeared increasingly strained amid mounting public criticism over corruption allegations involving senior government officials.

The raid comes at a time when President Museveni’s administration is facing growing pressure from citizens, civil society groups, and anti-corruption campaigners demanding stronger action against misuse of public resources and abuse of office.

Analysts say the operation could signal a broader effort by state authorities to demonstrate accountability at the highest levels of government while also recalibrating internal political alliances ahead of future political contests within the ruling party.

Although officials have not publicly detailed the full scope of the allegations, the investigation into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering suggests authorities are attempting to establish whether assets linked to the former parliamentary figure were lawfully acquired.

Neither the former Speaker nor her legal representatives had issued an official response following the security operation.

The developments are expected to intensify political debate in Uganda, where corruption, governance, and elite power struggles continue to dominate national discourse.

A legal team led by Counsel Caleb Alaka representing former Speaker Anita Among has arrived at her residence as the ongoing CID-led search inside the home continues following a corruption probe into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.
