Russia To Build Nuclear Power Plant In Rwanda

Reports reaching Taarifa investigative Desk reveal that Rwanda is among a few African countries that will host a nuclear power plant built by Russia.

According to yet-to be verified information, Russia’s nuclear giant Rosatom will conduct the construction.

Rosatom’s CEO, Alexei Likhachev, confirmed that Rwanda is among the four countries authorized to host new nuclear power plant projects.

This agreement represents a major step in Rwanda’s nuclear ambitions.

Rosatom, has also concluded an agreement to construct Rwanda’s Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST).

The nuclear facility—which will utilize Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology aimed at expanding Rwanda’s energy mix and is projected to be commissioned between 2030 and 2032.

This strategic partnership between Kigali and Moscow, includes building a modern scientific research hub that will to house a multi-purpose research reactor (up to 10 MW capacity) and functional laboratories.

Radioisotopes from the nuclear facility will be used by Rwanda to advance its medical capabilities (such as cancer treatment), boost agricultural productivity, and support local industries.
