The Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, in collaboration with the City of Kigali and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA Rwanda Office), has officially launched the IMOBIS project, a major initiative aimed at improving and modernising public transport operations in Kigali.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure, Dr. Jimmy Gasore, together with officials from the City of Kigali and KOICA Rwanda Office.

The project is expected to introduce smart mobility solutions that will make urban transport more efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly.

IMOBIS is designed to strengthen public transport management through the introduction of real-time passenger information systems that will allow commuters to track bus arrival times.

This innovation is expected to reduce waiting time at bus stops and improve overall travel planning for passengers.

The project will also support the development of modern and user-friendly bus shelters across the city, aimed at improving passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility.

In addition, IMOBIS will contribute to long-term transport planning by supporting the introduction and expansion of electric buses in Kigali, aligning with Rwanda’s green growth and sustainable urban development agenda.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Dr. Jimmy Gasore highlighted the importance of transforming public transport systems to match the pace of urban growth.

He noted that efficient mobility is essential for economic development and improving the quality of life in cities.

The IMOBIS project is expected to deliver multiple benefits to the Rwandan community, including reduced waiting times, improved reliability of bus services, enhanced passenger experience, and better coordination of transport operations.

It will also contribute to environmental protection through the promotion of electric mobility and reduced carbon emissions.

Residents of Kigali are expected to benefit directly from improved access to timely and reliable transport information, making daily commuting more predictable and convenient for workers, students, and businesses.

Overall, the IMOBIS project marks a significant step forward in Kigali’s journey toward becoming a smart and sustainable city, where technology and innovation are used to improve public services and urban living standards.
