Rwanda has convened a major international conference bringing together over 200 participants from 35 countries to accelerate investment in early childhood development (ECD), with a strong emphasis on scaling sustainable support systems in developing nations.

Held under the theme “Investing in Early Childhood Development is Critical to Sustainable Growth,” the summit is focusing on mobilizing financial resources and strengthening systems that support the holistic development of young children.

Opening the conference, Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Consolee Uwimana, highlighted Rwanda’s significant progress in expanding access to early childhood services.

She noted that the number of children benefiting from ECD programs has surged from 297,000 in 2020 to more than 1.2 million today.

This growth has been supported by the expansion of over 32,000 ECD centers nationwide.

“This progress reflects strong political will, effective collaboration, and a shared commitment to giving every child a strong start,” Uwimana said.

Despite these gains, the Minister acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in securing sustainable and efficient financing mechanisms for ECD programs.

She emphasized that forums like this summit are crucial for sharing experiences, fostering partnerships, and identifying innovative funding solutions.

The conference is expected to generate actionable strategies aimed at closing investment gaps and strengthening early childhood systems, especially in countries still facing developmental challenges.

Experts at the meeting agree that increased investment in early childhood is not only a social priority but also a long-term economic imperative.
