French Appeals Court Reopens Probe Into Agathe Kanziga’s Alleged Role in Rwanda Genocide

France’s judiciary has reignited a long-running and sensitive investigation into alleged involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, placing renewed focus on Agathe Kanziga, the widow of former Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana.

In a recent ruling, the Court of Appeal of France determined that the inquiry into Kanziga’s suspected role in both the planning and execution of the genocide should continue.

The decision overturns an earlier move made in August 2025, when investigative judges had ordered the suspension of the case.

At the time, the halt in proceedings raised concerns among prosecutors and observers, who argued that key evidence and witness testimonies had not been adequately considered.

France’s prosecution authorities subsequently appealed the decision, insisting that the investigation remained incomplete and warranted further examination.

The appeals court appears to have agreed, citing the need for a more thorough review of available material.

While no formal charges have been confirmed at this stage, the ruling signals that French authorities are not prepared to close the case without fully addressing lingering questions.

Agathe Kanziga, who has lived in France for years, has long been a controversial figure in discussions surrounding accountability for the genocide.

She has consistently denied any involvement.

The reopening of the investigation underscores France’s ongoing struggle to address its historical and legal connections to the 1994 atrocities.

It also reflects broader international efforts to ensure that individuals suspected of playing a role in the genocide are brought to justice, regardless of how much time has passed.

Further legal proceedings are expected as investigators revisit evidence and testimonies previously set aside.
