Rwanda’s Chamber of Deputies has approved a law ratifying more than $430 million in long-term concessional loans secured from the International Development Association and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The financing, which will be repaid over a period ranging from 15 to 31 years, is expected to support key national development priorities, with a strong focus on expanding access to reliable and sustainable energy.

A significant share of the funds will be invested in extending electricity transmission and distribution networks, particularly in densely populated areas where demand continues to grow.

The loans will also help accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions, in line with Rwanda’s commitment to environmentally responsible development.

Beyond the energy sector, the investment is expected to stimulate job creation and strengthen critical infrastructure in transport and tourism, two sectors seen as vital to the country’s long-term economic growth.

Lawmakers said the financing will play an important role in improving public services, supporting economic resilience, and advancing Rwanda’s broader development agenda.
