A newly signed defense Cooperation agreement between the DRC and Zambia could result in the deployment of Zambian troops in Eastern Congo to fight the AFC/M23 alliance.

Emerging reports reaching Taarifa investigative Desk indicate that Zambian troops will be deployed in Uvira city under the UN mission for the stabilisation of Congo (MONUSCO).

The AFC/M23 rebels demanded that Uvira City be under the protection of a neutral force. The rebels overrun the city in lightening offensive, but later unilaterally pulled out to pave the way for the implementation of the Washington agreement signed recently between Kigali and Kinshasa.

This bilateral defence and security cooperation aims to combat transnational crime and develop coordinated strategies aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability in both Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The agreement was signed on January 13 during the 14th Session of the Zambia–Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) on Defence and Security convened in Lubumbashi, DRC.

The gathering brought together senior government and security officials from both countries.
