Reports reaching Taarifa Investigative Desk reveal that as of Sunday morning, fighting has been going on south of the city of Uvira a situation that has triggered panic among the population.

According to military sources, the Wazalendo militia reinforced by FARDC troops arrived on boats via lake Tanganyika and attacked inland positions of the AFC/M23 rebels.

According to sources conversant with the rebel movement fighting tactics, “these provocations may lead to the opening of the front, which would impact the fall of  Kalemie city into the hands of AFC/M23 rebels. This is a similar situation that played out before the fall of Goma and Bukavu,” a source said.

However, it should be noted that the Congolese troops and allies have encircled Uvira city in a semicircle with an opening to the north.

Details also indicate that AFC/M23 are holding their positions despite clashes reported less than 10 km from the city.

“Fighting broke out on the evening of this Saturday, December 27, in Kakumba, not far from Katongo. At 7 p.m., columns of M23 fighters, came down from Katongo hill toward the national road RN5 connecting the city of Uvira to Kamanyola,” a member of civil society said.
