Zambian President Pardons Veteran Journalist

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Monday pardoned a veteran journalist as well as a former air force commander and a former minister to mark his 63rd birthday.
The Zambian leader pardoned Derrick Sinjela, editor of the Rainbow Newspaper, a month before his release in December this year following his one year jail sentence as well as former Zambia Air Force commander Christopher Singongo and former minister Maxwell Mwale and two others, according to a release from his office.
The statement added that the pardon was in line with powers vested in the Zambian leader.
He further urged the community to help the pardoned inmates fit into society by showing them love.
The veteran journalist was jailed in December last year after the court found him guilty of attacking judges in a series of articles in his newspaper.
Several media bodies and other civic activists have been pushing for his early release from prison since then.
