A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in possession of counterfeit $20000 in Kilimanjaro, a pub in Gatsata Sector, Gasabo District.

Police Spokesperson in the City of Kigali, Marie Goretti Umutesi told journalists on Monday that the woman is being held at Gatsata Police Station where she was arrested.

“She sent a motorcyclist for exchange but the latter was cautious and remembered that Police always urges the public to be cautious about receiving counterfeit notes ensuring one another’s security, and providing information on time. So,

he went to Gatsata Police Station and reported her,” said the Police Spokesperson.

After receiving this information, Police instantly followed the motorcyclist to show them where the woman was in the pub.

When they arrived there, she tried to hide the dollars in the pub’s ceiling but Police searched the pub and found them there.

However, the woman couldn’t talk to the media at that time because of the ongoing investigation but she admitted to the crime and confessed that she has been purchasing counterfeit dollars in bulks and having them exchanged in Rwandan francs.

CIP Umutesi further noted it is the second time that the woman has been arrested with fake dollars.

She already served 2 years in Nyarugenge Prison in Mageragere for the Sam crime and has been out for six months.

The Police spokesperson further commended those who have played a role in providing information on time, and warned those who may have the same intentions to use counterfeit currencies, that security operatives in collaboration with the public are alert and won’t tolerate their misdeeds.

CIP Umutesi said that if found guilty of this crime, the woman is liable to face sanctions provided by article 269 of the Penal Code whereby any person who, fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins or bank notes which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, notes issued by the Treasury with its stamp or brand, either banknotes or alike that have legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, or one who introduces or issues in Rwanda such effects or notes with knowledge that they are forged or falsified, commits an offence.

Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than seven years.
