USA, Brazil, Switzerland Reject “Rushed” Departure of MONUSCO

The United States government has warned that a rushed pull out of the UN Stabilisation Mission (Monusco) in DRC may have devastating effects on the security and humanitarian situation in the East of the Vast mineral rich country.

During the 9427th meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held Thursday, September 28 at the headquarters of the said organization in the American city, New York, the United States openly called on the international community to ensure that the departure of the Monusco “does not exacerbate an already serious humanitarian crisis”.

Kinshasa government is intensifying its approach to obtain the “gradual” departure of Monusco, certain “great powers” remain perplexed about the security situation in the country after the withdrawal of UN forces.

he USA proposed to the Security Council to establish a consultation framework with the Congolese authorities for the “effectiveness” of Monusco.

At the same time, they insisted that “things must be clear because the mission alone cannot resolve the problem of insecurity in the east of the country.”

Switzerland, for its part, during the intervention of its representative to the United Nations Security Council, explained that the “precipitous” departure of the blue helmets could lead to “harmful consequences for thousands of internally displaced people”.

“The presence of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo constitutes the only shield, however weak it may be, against the violence and abuses of armed groups,” Berne insisted.

During the 9427th meeting of the Security Council, Brazil also expressed its doubts about the withdrawal of UN forces. According to him, this can “create security vacuums and power struggles leading to violence and human rights violations”.

“It is illusory and counterproductive to cling to the maintenance of Monusco”

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, denunciations relating to the ineffectiveness of Monusco’s actions on the ground have increased for several months.

In his speech during the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, President Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi, clearly indicated that after more than two decades of presence of the UN Mission in the DRC, it is time for the country to take “fully its destiny in hand” in order to become the main actor of its own stability.

“We are grateful for their support and partnership but we are also aware that the gradual withdrawal of MONUSCO is a necessary step to consolidate the progress we have already made. It is deplored that the peacekeeping missions deployed for 25 years in the DRC have not succeeded in confronting the rebellions and armed conflicts which are tearing this country apart, nor the Great Lakes region, nor in protecting civilian populations,” the Head of the Democratic Republic of Congo was indignant. Congolese state.

However, MONUSCO itself regularly states that it continues to “successfully” carry out its operations on the ground. Faced with the ineffectiveness of which it is accused, it often tries to explain it either by the lack of support and collaboration from the civilian population, or by the opposition on the ground coming from certain armed groups.

During the presentation of the quarterly report on the security situation in the DRC, Bintou Keita, special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Congolese soil, suggested that the UN Mission has increased its joint patrols with the Congolese armed forces in order “to stabilize the security situation in the east of the country.
