Triumph As Rwanda’s Amavubi Beats Ethiopia

The Rwanda National football team, Amavubi, secured a well-deserved win over Ethiopia in the first leg game in the qualifications for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2018).

Amavubi beat Ethiopia 3-2 in the play-off match held this Sunday at Addis International Stadium.

The hosts opened the score in the18th minute with a goal scored by Asechalew Girma to give his nation side a half time lead.

Rwanda got an equalizing goal through the free kick well taken by Rayon Sports left back Eric Rutanga in the 55th minute of the game.

It didn’t take long for the home team to lead the game as Abubakher Sanni netted a header goal by converting the ball kicked from the corner into the goal in the 65th minute.

Amavubi head coach made important changes by taking out Jabel Manishimwe, who was substituted by Mhadjiri Hakizimana and Innocent Nshuti was replaced by Justin Mico.

The APR FC midfielder Muhadjiri Hakizimana proved it might not have been a right decision to be benched by coach in the first half as he scored an equalizer on the 78th minute.

However, the thirst for an away win for Amavubi did not end then as men coached by German Antoine Hey got the third and the winning goal scored by Police FC forward Abeddy Biramahire 10 minutes before the final whistle.

Rwanda will host Ethiopia on October 12, 2017 in the return leg game in Kigali.

Ethiopia are now required to beat Amavubi by 2-0 goal difference to make it to the finals of CHAN 2018 which will take place in Morocco.

Rwanda last participated in CHAN games in 2016 when they were eliminated by DRC in the quarterfinals in a competition that was held in Rwanda.
