DRC’s Tout Puissant Mazembe football club has ignited widespread celebrations among its Congolese fans after beating 2-1 Primeiro do Agosto of Angola to qualify for the quarterfinals of the African Champions League.
With 10 points, the Ravens are leaders of group A ahead of Zamalek, 7 points. Zesco and Primeiro each have two points.
Mazembe owes its qualification to two scorers during the Saturday encounter: Chico Ushindi and Jackson Muleka, who whipped the soldiers of Primeiro do Agosto.
The Angolans were determined to win and ultimately relaunch in this tight race. In the 8th minute, the Mabululu twirl deceived Sylvain Gbohou, with a header directly into the net- an opening score. 1-. For Primeiro do Agosto.
In the second half, the Congolese returned with much vigour- Mazembe pressed the accelerator. In the 51st minute, Kalaba attempted an instant recovery from left to right. The ball passed right by. Two minutes later, Primeiro’s goalkeeper saved the Angolans.
In the 68th minute, Jackson Muleka scored the break goal. Back to goal, it pivots, and strikes at ground level to score. 2-1 at the TP Mazembe stadium and the jubilee stadium.
With this victory, Mazembe retains its leadership position and qualifies for the quarterfinals. Zamalek is his runner-up with 7 points, while Zesco Uniets from Zambia and Primeiro each have 2 points.
Mazembe will play Zamalec in Egypt on January 25th, 2020, while Zesco and Primeiro will face off in Zambia, to seek a victory, and hope for two poor performances from Zamalek.
