The Basque rider Ion Izagirre, riding for Cofidis, won stage 12 from Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais in the Rhone, after a solo attack in the final 30km.
It was his team’s second success in this year’s Tour, following the French rider Victor Lafay’s win in San Sebastián, on stage two.
Izagirre pumped his right fist as he milked the applause of the crowd in the final 500 metres. Approaching the finish line, he blew kisses to the crowds and raised his arms above his head. The Basque rider emerged from the attacks to win 168.8km stage to Belleville-en-Beaujolais
After another frantic opening to the stage, in which multiple riders fought to escape the peloton, the race eventually settled down, but only after close to 80km of attacking, with two main groups battling for control of the situation.
