Construction of the Tanzania-Rwanda railway line could be postponed.
Discussions at the 4th Meeting on implementations of the railway constructions held on Tuesday, Infrastructure Ministers , Clever Gatete of Rwanda and his Tanzanian counterpart Engineer Isaac Aloyce Kamwelwe proposed the postponement.
“We are working together with African Development Bank to negotiate financial support so that we may begin with sufficient amount of money since the projects itself is higher than the governments’ financial capacity, ”Minister Gatete said.
Minister Gatete said that the two heads of states will be consulted before a decision is taken on the date to begin the implementations.
“The projects is very expensive, so we need o talk to the head of states,” he said. “If they grant us the pre-project will commence,” said Minister Gatete.
The 571Kms railway which will link both Tanzania and Rwanda from Isaka to Kigali needs US$2.5 billion budget from both governments.
Rwanda will table US$1.2 billions to and the rest will be raised by Tanzania.
The two ministers revealed that the planed time to begin has already come yet the two countries have insufficient funds but after the review they suggested it be pushed to February 2019.
Rwamda is required to construct 150 Kms in 400Kms to Isaka according to the study made in 2014 on Dar-es Salaam –Kigali railway which has the total kilometers equal to 1464Kms.
The railway is expected to reduce the cost of export and import transportations and facilitations of bilateral trade between the populations of both countries.
Tanzania which has a long part of the railway has already started. The part from Dar-es Salaam to Morogoro is at 37% with a length of 330Kms and Morogoro to Makutupora has a length of 426Kms is at 4.6%
