The national games slated to be held in Kigali from July 20-22nd will attract 220 athletes. Sports disciplines to be played are Athletics, Swimming, Football and Bocce

The 220 athletes were qualified to go for the national games among a total of over 600 athletes and partners (with and without disabilities) from 10 districts namely; Kamonyi, Kicukiro, Gasabo, Nyarugenge, Gisagara, Rulindo, Rutsiro, Ngororero and Muhanga.

It is in these games where a number of 26 athletes will be selected to represent Rwanda in the Special Olympics World Summer Games (SOWSG) to be held in Abu Dhabi (UAE) from March 14th to 21st, 2019.

Pastor Deus Sangwa, the Special Olympics Rwanda Board Chair said the games played by people with intellectual disabilities have helped parents of children with intellectual disabilities to recognize their children’s talents.

“This has made parents let their children get out of the dark places they kept them hidden and their health be preserved,” he said.

Special Olympics Rwanda, was accredited to operate in Rwanda in 2003, a year after it was founded.

Since then, the nongovernmental organization has already registered over 16,000 people with intellectual disabilities (both children and adults) from schools, centres and communities across the country.

1,029 families and over 1,000 coaches and volunteers were registered in all areas of operation.

Pastor Deus Sangwa, called on parents to be the “first coaches” for children with intellectual disabilities.

“If you have a child with the intellectual disabilities, bring them out so that he can be able to develop and showcase his talent to the world,” he said.
