Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won stage nine of the Tour de France in Laruns on Sunday. 168 riders took the start of stage 9 in Pau where a tribute was paid to former Team Sky/Ineos sport director Nicolas Portal.
He won his first Tour de France stage out of a 5-man breakaway after brave attacker Marc Hirschi who soloed 90km before the end got caught within 2km to go.
Tadej is the second Slovenian to win in Laruns in just as many finishes in the Pyrenean town, two years after Primoz Roglic who moved into the overall lead of the Tour de France for the first time in his career. Adam Yates surrendered in the ascent to col de Marie-Blanque.
Meanwhile, Primož Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) moved into the overall lead of the Tour de France 2020 after finishing second on stage nine behind Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).
The pair were part of a quartet, along with Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), to go clear from the other GC contenders on the final climb of the Col de Marie Blanque, which they summited around 18km from the finish. Only Marc Hirschi (Sunweb), who had been out front for almost 90km, remained in front of them with less than 20 seconds in hand.
