Rwanda’s Only Surviving World War II Veteran Denied Fertilizer

Captain Nyagashotsi Epimaque clocked 104 years old this year and still walks anywhere freely with a sharp memory of details of his life journey.

Taarifa visited this world war II veteran at his home in Gakunyu village, Ndatemwa cell, Gatsibo district for a conversation on various subjects.

“I’m very grateful to President Paul Kagame who completely transformed my life. He gave me land, a cow and built me a new house. I have daily supply of milk, I grow food,” a joyful Nyagashotsi told our team at his well maintained home.

In 2021, President Kagame gifted Nyagatshotsi with a new fully furnished house, over hectare of cultivation land, a hybrid diary cow valued at over Frw16million. This followed a story published by Taarifa detailing an appauling previous life the World War II veteran was living.

However, Nyagashotsi told Taarifa that there are a few challenges he is facing currently and wants authorities to intervene.

“I have been denied fertilisers on several planting seasons. I’m required to present a land title for the cultivation area I was given. I have met the Mayor many times and has been promising to have the land title processed. I have been waiting for four years and nothing is happening,” Nyagashotsi told Taarifa.

Nyagashotsi says that he is left with no option but to only use compost manure provided by his cow, “but it is not enough” and this has negatively affected the total yield from the garden.
