Rwandans are relieved finally they got a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Dr. Maurice Musoni has successfully completed his degree at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) becoming the first Rwandan Cardiac Surgeon.
Reacting to their colleagues achievement, another Rwandan physician congragulated Dr. Musoni upon successful completition of this gruesome training.
“We are immensely proud of you Dr. Musoni Maurice. A top achievement- Rwanda’s First Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Hard work, your long nights, perseverance, tenacity, your never-die-spirit, is an inspiration to each one of us. You have shown us the sky is indeed the limit.”
In February Dr. Musoni also took part in the operation of a 19 year old girl in the Oshen King Faisal Hospital theatre along with Team Heart that is on their 12th Mission in Rwanda for Open Heart Surgery.
Rwanda is gradually transitioning in the medical sector and with this first achievement; Dr. Musoni will become instrumental in the operation of a cardiac Centre that is scheduled to be established in the country.
Team Heart intends to facilitate a partnership with the Rwanda Ministry of Health to establish a sustainable, independent, dedicated cardiac care center for children and adults with all forms of heart disease, which would be a center of excellence in the country and for all of East Africa.
This team helped to identify Dr. Musoni who had been living in South Africa, training in general and cardiac surgery.
Rwanda’s situation presents a resource-limited setting for cardiothoracic surgery – locally most patients have been facing major post-surgical challenges, including systemic anticoagulation and barriers to follow-up care.
