Rwanda Severs Diplomatic Ties with Belgium Over ‘Neocolonial Delusions’

Kigali, March 17, 2025 – The Government of Rwanda has officially severed diplomatic relations with Belgium, citing the European nation’s continued interference and hostile actions. The decision, effective immediately, was announced today by the Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to the official statement, Rwanda’s move follows Belgium’s persistent efforts to undermine the country, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Rwandan government accused Belgium of playing a “deep and violent historical role” in the DRC crisis, especially in actions targeting Rwanda.

“Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilize against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region,” the statement reads.

Beyond its current role, Rwanda strongly condemned Belgium’s historical involvement in fueling ethnic divisions in the region, which culminated in entrenched discrimination, persecution, and ultimately the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The statement further accused Belgium of allowing its territory to serve as a base for groups engaged in genocide denial and the spread of extremist ideologies.

Rwanda emphasized that the decision to cut diplomatic ties reflects its commitment to protecting national interests and upholding sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect. The government has ordered all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. However, it assured that diplomatic properties, archives, and assets of the Belgian mission in Kigali will be protected in accordance with the Vienna Convention.

This development marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two nations, whose relationship has been strained by historical grievances and differing perspectives on regional security dynamics. Belgium has yet to officially respond to Rwanda’s decision.
