Rwanda Receives Genocide Fugitive Ahmed Napoleon Mbonynkiza Following U.S. Deportation

The National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) has received Ahmed Napoleon Mbonynkiza following his deportation from the United States. Mbonynkiza, who was born in 1968, was deported after serving a 15-year sentence in the U.S. for sexual assault-related offenses.

Upon arrival in Rwanda, Mbonynkiza was taken into custody by Rwandan authorities for further legal processing. He had been tried and convicted in absentia by the Nyakabanda Gacaca Court in 2007 for his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The NPPA commended the cooperation of U.S. judicial authorities in deporting genocide fugitives and their ongoing assistance in legal matters. Rwanda continues its pursuit of individuals accused of genocide crimes, working with international partners to ensure justice is served.

Mbonynkiza’s case follows a series of similar deportations and extraditions, reinforcing Rwanda’s commitment to holding genocide fugitives accountable under the law. Authorities have confirmed that he will now undergo the necessary legal procedures in accordance with Rwandan judicial processes.
