Immigration chiefs from Rwanda and Uganda have concluded a two-day meeting in Kigali aimed at strengthening cross-border cooperation, improving migration management, and enhancing security between the two nations. The discussions, held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, are part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral ties and follow a similar meeting in Mbarara, Uganda, in September 2023.
The Ugandan delegation began the second day of the meeting by visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, where they paid respects to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The visit provided insights into Rwanda’s history, the devastating impact of the genocide, and the country’s extraordinary recovery and development.
The program continued with a joint visit to the Gatuna/Katuna One Stop Border Post, a critical hub for cross-border trade and movement. The visit highlighted ongoing efforts to streamline immigration processes, improve border security, and facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people between the two nations.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a joint report that reaffirmed Rwanda and Uganda’s commitment to close collaboration on migration matters. Key areas of focus included enhancing border management, ensuring the security of cross-border travelers, and supporting regional integration initiatives.
Officials from both countries emphasized the importance of these meetings in fostering stability and mutual development, with a shared vision of a secure and well-managed border system that benefits citizens and strengthens regional cooperation.
