Rwanda Administers 669 Marburg Vaccine Doses, Reports Two Recoveries

Rwanda’s vaccination campaign against the Marburg virus disease (MVD) continues, with a total of 669 doses administered, including 49 more since the last update, according to Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, the Minister of Health.

This effort is part of the ongoing strategy to curb the outbreak.

The latest figures show two new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 20.

No new cases or deaths were reported, maintaining the number of confirmed cases at 61 and fatalities at 14. Currently, 27 patients are under isolation and treatment, with most showing signs of improvement.

“Rwanda’s multisectoral MVD response team is working 24/7 to end this outbreak soon,” Dr. Nsanzimana said, noting that additional therapeutics and vaccines have been received to support treatment and prevention.

Since the outbreak began, all confirmed cases have been linked to a hospital cluster in Kigali and their contacts. Health authorities report no evidence of community transmission, and they continue to monitor the situation. The cumulative number of tests has reached 3,657, an increase of 281 from the previous count.

Authorities are urging the public to adhere to preventive measures, including avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, maintaining proper hygiene, and refraining from handshakes or close greetings.

Common symptoms of Marburg include high fever, severe headaches, muscle ache, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea. Residents experiencing symptoms are encouraged to report them by calling the health hotline at 114.

Efforts to control the outbreak remain ongoing, with a focus on vaccination, patient care, and public education to prevent the virus from spreading further.
