As Rwanda and the world prepare to commemorate the Genocide against the Tutsi, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) is intensifying efforts to encourage citizens to reject genocide ideology.
On Thursday, RIB continued its awareness campaign in Gasabo District, specifically in Kinyinya Sector, where residents, particularly from Kagugu Sector, were educated on the dangers of genocide ideology.
As the country’s investigative authority, RIB is aware that in the lead-up to the genocide commemoration, during the commemoration period itself, and in the days leading to the end of July each year, there is an increase in activities that deny, trivialize, or incite genocide, as well as acts targeting survivors and their properties. The rise in such activities unsettles many, disrupting the journey of unity and reconciliation among Rwandans.
Recent statistics indicate that Rwanda’s national reconciliation rate stands at 94.7%. A representative from the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement told Taarifa Rwanda that acts of harassment against genocide survivors are among the reasons this figure has not yet reached 100%.
As part of its mandate, RIB conducts annual awareness programs to educate the public about crimes that threaten society, the laws against them, and how to prevent them. Through various community engagements, RIB officials explain the root causes of crimes, effective prevention strategies, and the importance of promptly reporting suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
In Kagugu Cell, residents were reminded that preventing genocide ideology fosters peaceful coexistence and strengthens national unity. Jean Claude Ntirenganya, head of RIB’s crime prevention department, urged citizens to report any suspected cases of genocide ideology before they escalate into crimes.
“It is important to live peacefully with others. If you notice or suspect any form of genocide ideology, report it immediately so that it can be stopped in time,” he said.
Kinyinya Sector Executive Secretary, Vuguziga Charles, commended RIB for its role in promoting peaceful coexistence in the community. He also urged residents to avoid other crimes, including corruption, smuggling, and related offenses.
RIB’s awareness campaign, titled “Preventing Genocide Ideology and Related Crimes, Smuggling, Drug Abuse, and Human Trafficking,” will continue in Kicukiro District starting the week of March 24, 2025.
