Raila Odinga’s AUC Fate to Be Decided on Saturday

Raila Odinga has concluded his campaign for the African Union’s top job with a visit to Bujumbura, Burundi, where he met with President Évariste Ndayishimiye.

On Saturday, the new chairperson of the African Union Commission will be known. It is now or never for Raila Amolo Odinga, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Richard Randriamandrato.

The leaders from East African Community agreed to back Raila Odinga as candidate for chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

“We have sat down in the spirit of EAC, consulted as heads of state and agreed to front one candidate,” President William Ruto said.

In Odinga’s manifesto the issues highlighted include; quality education, markets for African products, climate change and mitigation, energy, infrastructure and Africa Continental Free Trade area, among others.

The Kenyan opposition politician has previously worked as Africa Union’s high representative for infrastructure. He has been exposed to the internal works of the AU and also gained connections with financiers, presidents and other key stakeholders in the continent.

Candidates for the Deputy Chairperson job include; Salah Francis, Selma Malika, Mohamed Ahmed Fathi, Hanan Morsy, Najat M.Elhajjaji and Latifa Akharbach.
