President Paul Kagame has praised China’s approach to global partnerships, emphasizing its inclusive and balanced engagement, during his address at the 2024 Doha Forum. Kagame’s remarks were part of broader discussions on fostering global stability and addressing geopolitical competition.
Speaking on the sidelines of the forum, Kagame highlighted China’s commitment to cooperation that benefits all parties. “We don’t see anything in history that suggests that China has misused its strength. Rather, we have been benefitting from the cooperation and the attitude of bringing everybody to the table where everyone feels they are winning,” he stated. He added that China’s role in balancing global power dynamics is critical, particularly in reducing the misuse of power by the global north.
While acknowledging the reality of geopolitical competition, Kagame described China’s engagement as “fair and balanced,” contrasting it with the global north’s approach, which he argued has often hindered the kind of cooperation necessary for global stability. “The purpose of a global order is to have global stability, which we do not have. The global north has not been favorable to the kind of cooperation that creates the stability where everyone feels they are gaining,” Kagame noted.
Kagame also stressed the importance of unity and collaboration within the global south, urging nations to work together to amplify their influence on the international stage. He argued that by fostering stronger cooperation within the global south, countries could position themselves to achieve mutually beneficial partnerships with the global north.
Beyond geopolitics, Kagame’s engagements at the forum extended to innovation and security. In a meeting with Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the two leaders discussed preparations for the Global AI Summit on Africa, scheduled to take place in Kigali in April 2025. Organized by Rwanda’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in collaboration with the WEF, the summit will explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for Africa’s development.
Additionally, Kagame met with Dr. Christoph Heusgen, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, to exchange perspectives on global and continental security issues. The discussions underscored the interconnected nature of global challenges and the need for collective solutions.
President Kagame’s remarks at the Doha Forum reinforced his vision for a global order that prioritizes fairness, inclusivity, and mutual benefit, with a call for stronger partnerships and innovative solutions to address the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
