President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has arrived in Apia, the capital city of Samoa, for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Upon his arrival, he was warmly received by Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Customs and Revenue, Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio.
President Kagame has chaired the Commonwealth since 2022, following Rwanda’s successful hosting of the previous CHOGM in Kigali. His leadership of the 56-member intergovernmental organization has been marked by a focus on digital transformation, youth empowerment, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and equitable development.
This year’s meeting in Apia is expected to focus on the pressing challenges facing member states, including economic recovery in the post-pandemic world, climate resilience, and international security. Leaders from across the Commonwealth will gather to discuss and collaborate on strategies to foster peace, prosperity, and sustainability across member nations.
As Chair, President Kagame is likely to emphasize the need for continued cooperation within the Commonwealth, particularly in driving inclusive growth and leveraging technology to build resilient economies.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting takes place every two years, bringing together leaders from across the Commonwealth to discuss global and regional issues, and to formulate collective policies and initiatives for the future.
This meeting will serve as an opportunity for Rwanda to highlight its ongoing contributions to the Commonwealth and President Kagame’s continued commitment to fostering dialogue and development on a global stage.
