President Kagame and UCI President David Lappartient Discuss Cycling Development in Rwanda

President Paul Kagame met with David Lappartient, President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), to discuss key developments in cycling, including the establishment of the UCI World Cycling Center Regional Development Satellite in Rwanda. The initiative aims to serve as a training hub for elite cyclists from Rwanda, across Africa, and beyond, further cementing the country’s growing reputation as a cycling powerhouse.

During their discussions, President Kagame and Lappartient also explored the potential for Tour du Rwanda to be elevated to the Pro Series and, eventually, the prestigious UCI World Tour level. Such an upgrade would place Rwanda’s premier cycling event among the world’s top professional races, attracting elite teams and international recognition.

Rwanda has steadily emerged as a center for cycling excellence, hosting major international events and preparing to welcome the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, the first of its kind in Africa. The establishment of the UCI training satellite is expected to boost talent development, providing African cyclists with world-class training facilities and opportunities to compete at the highest levels.

With President Kagame’s continued support and UCI’s commitment to cycling’s growth in Africa, Rwanda is well on its way to becoming a key global player in the sport.
