Police in Burera District is holding two suspects after intercepting and impounding their vehicle which was loaded with 9348 sachets (779 dozens) of Sky Blue, a gin classified as illicit and banned in Rwanda.

The vehicle was intercepted on Friday in Ntaruka cell of Kinoni Sector along Cyanika border-Musanze highway, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said.

Two people, who were at the time on board, were taken into custody, he added.

“Police had information about a vehicle that was loaded with contrabands, and likely to move at night. A roadblock was mounted, but in some way, the traffickers got information about the operation and they tried to use remote roads. Security organs communicated and they were intercepted at about 2:00 am by security night patrol in Ntaruka cell,” IP Gasasira said.

The contrabands were trafficked into the country from Uganda through a porous border.

“The routes used by drug traffickers in Burera and other parts of the Northern Province, like in other parts of the country, have been mapped; we sensitized communities especially those residing along the borders on fighting these drugs, and majority operations are based on the feedback we get from the general public,” the spokesperson explained.

“Fighting drug related crimes and breaking chains of supply are part of the daily police operations and outreach programmes,” he added, advising “those still engaged in this criminal business to invest their money in other legal businesses.”

The Prime Minister’s order of June 2015 determining unauthorized drinks and other controlled substances classified as narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors, lists about ten substances that are unauthorized in Rwanda.

Other listed unauthorized substances classified as narcotics are Kanyanga, Mayirungi, muriture, chief waragi, Suzie and other liquid substances that contain more than zero and a half percent (0.5%) of methanol in the composition or considered as a narcotic drug by Instructions of the Minister in charge of health.

Article 594 of the penal code stipulates in its second paragraph that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five year years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.
