Police in Nyanza district has arrested a man identified as Jean Bosco Ntigurirwa who was driving a vehicle loaded with 3800 packets of polythene bags
Police also impounded the vehicle that is registered with plate number RAC 339M. the vehicle is impounded at Musasamana police station where the suspect is also held.
According the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the suspected was intercepted during a regular police security patrol in Busasamana sector.
The non-biodegradable bags have been outlawed in Rwanda since 2008.
Using non biodegradable polythene bags is prohibited and punishable with a fine of up to Rwf300,000 as stipulated in article 433 of the penal code.
Rwanda has etched its name in the global environmental records for successfully managing to abolish the use polythene that is a threat to the ecosystem.
