Nyamulagira Volcano Erupts Causing Fears in Goma

The Goma Volcano Observatory (OVG) reported Wednesday that Nyamulagira volcano is erupting spewing flames raising concerns among residents.

Nyamulagira volcano is located in the Virunga mountain range.

According to Goma Volcano Observatory (OVG) the lava flows are directed towards Virunga National Park, without directly threatening the city of Goma of nearly 2million population.

“Nyamulagira has been erupting inside its crater for several months,” said a scientific source from the OVG, emphasizing that there is no immediate danger to the population.

According to Professor Charles Balagizi, scientific director of the OVG, the lava is flowing mainly from the northern, western, and southwest flanks of the volcano.

“Nyiragongo, located about twenty kilometers from Goma, constitutes a natural barrier against the Nyamulagira ash flows and possible ashfall,” he explained to local press.

Satellite images revealed three separate ash flows, the most advanced having already traveled seven kilometers toward the park.

Although no inhabited areas are threatened, local authorities recommend that the population remain vigilant and follow health guidelines, particularly regarding water consumption and food washing.

Located at an altitude of 3,058 meters, Nyamulagira is a shield volcano, whose activity occurs mainly within Virunga National Park.

Unlike Nyiragongo, which overlooks Goma and poses a direct threat due to its rapid ash flows, Nyamulagira’s eruptions have historically spared urban areas.

The two volcanoes, among the world’s most active, remain under constant surveillance, as their past eruptions have caused major destruction.

Nyiragongo’s last eruption, in 2021, resulted in loss of life and significant material damage.
