Fabien Neretse may be elderly, walking on clutches and probably having memory failure, but 25 years ago in Rwanda was very instrumental in hunting and killing Tutsi in the 1994 genocide against Tutsi that claimed more than a million lives.
After the genocide this man currently 71 fled into exile and has been living in Belgium but the long arm of the law has caught up with him.
On Thursday, he appeared in a public court to face charges of genocide crimes at a fully parked court house.
During the genocide period, Prosecution says Neretse took part in the killings at Mataba sector of the current day Gakenke district; he also led killings at Nyamirambo in Kigali.
Prosecution has presented details indicating that Neretse also spotted and led to the butcher of a Belgian national Claire Beckers and her Rwandan husband Isaie Bucyana and their daughter only identified as Katia all killed on 9th April 1994.
Neretse retorted in defense accusing Prosecution of acting as the spokesperson of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), “All these are trumped up charges which should not be considered. The more you craft these charges the more you will falter Mr Prosecutor”.
He denied participating in the killings at ACEDI Mataba School arguing that it would not be possible that Tutsi students in this school would survive killing yet it is where Interahamwe were training from.
He told court that they are trying him instead of Liyetona Emmanuel Neretse. He denied ever being in the military
