Rwanda is showing signs of progress in its battle against the Marburg virus outbreak, with recent data indicating a shift towards more recoveries than fatalities. This development comes as the country bolsters its response with the arrival of its first batch of vaccines.
In a press conference, on Sunday morning, the Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, provided an update on the outbreak’s status. “Since Marburg appeared in Rwanda, we’ve had 61 confirmed cases,” he reported. “Of these, 18 patients have recovered and been discharged, while 29 remain under medical care. Sadly, we’ve lost 14 individuals to the disease.”
Dr. Nsanzimana highlighted a positive trend observed over the past week. “In the last seven days, we’ve seen more recoveries than deaths,” he stated. “Even more encouragingly, we’ve had no new cases in the past three days. While this is certainly good news, we must remain vigilant.”
A significant boost to Rwanda’s response efforts came on Saturday evening with the arrival of 1000 more doses of Marburg vaccines. These will be primarily used to protect healthcare workers on the frontlines of patient care and monitoring.
Despite these positive developments, challenges persist. Dr. Nsanzimana noted that three of the 29 patients currently receiving treatment are in critical condition. “We are doing everything possible to provide them with the best care,” he assured.
Dr. Brian Chirombo, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Rwanda, commended the country’s response measures. He advised against imposing travel and trade restrictions, stating, “The measures taken by Rwanda and its partners are sufficient. Stopping travel would not help; rather, it would further damage the country’s economy.”
As the situation evolves, Rwandan health officials are continuously reviewing and updating their strategies. “Many decisions were made in the first week,” Dr. Nsanzimana explained. “Now it’s time to review them. We’ll be announcing new guidelines soon.”
The Ministry of Health continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining preventive measures. While the recent trends are encouraging, officials stress that the fight against Marburg is far from over.
They urge all residents to stay informed and follow health guidelines as Rwanda works towards containing and ultimately eliminating this outbreak.
