African governments should engage local farmers to be more productive which in effect makes them wealtheir, President Paul Kagame said during the agri-food systems business forum in the capital Kigali.
“In Africa, most of our people work in agriculture and agribusiness. Significant gains have been made in recent years, to make our food systems more resilient and productive,” President Kagame said.
He added, “But there is still so much room to grow, and make our farmers more productive, and therefore more wealthy.”
Higher productivity also means lower food prices for consumers, which has a direct impact on poverty and inflation.
The forum (september 2-6) has highlighted key strategies for speeding up progress particularly, digital and technology applications, and attracting more private investment into agriculture
The gathering brings together investors, food systems experts, deal owners, and representatives from the host country’s legacy program to foster projects, deals, and products, while catalyzing private sector investments and partnerships within the agricultural sector.
“We are proud to host the Africa FOod Systems FOrum in Rwanda. I commend AGRA, under the leadership of Hailemariam Desalegn and Agnes Kalibata, for ensuring that Afria projects a clear vision on the future of food systems,” Kagame said.
