The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has commended the signing of a peace agreement between Kinshasa and Kigali.
The peace declaration took place on April 25 in Washington under the auspices of the United States.
In a statement, MONUSCO noted that this declaration “reflects a desire to consolidate the progress made through previous efforts and to pave the way for strengthened cooperation.”
It welcomed the parties’ “building on previous processes,” including the Luanda process, mediated by Angolan President João Lourenço on behalf of the African Union.
“MONUSCO remains ready to support implementation efforts, particularly in the areas of civilian protection and peacebuilding,” said Bruno Lemarquis, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the DRC and acting head of the UN mission.
The mission has emphasized the need to put in place concrete mechanisms to ensure effective peace.
MONUSCO also welcomes the commitment shown by Kinshasa and Kigali to “fight against the proliferation of non-state armed groups” and to “promote a transparent regional economic integration framework for the benefit of the population.”
The mission also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national and regional efforts for a “peaceful, stable and prosperous” future in the DRC and throughout the Great Lakes region.
