Man Arrested For Impersonating WASAC Employee


Police in Nyanza District arrested one Boniface Uwase 30, on September 27, for allegedly impersonating an employee of Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC).

The suspect was caught red-handed donning in the utility body field uniform guising as an engineer.

“He was at the time cutting power transmission lines in Mukingo Sector,” Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, police spokesperson for the Southern region, said.

“Residents saw Uwase cutting power-lines, and got suspicious; they called police, and during questioning, officers found out that he is not an employee of WASAC, who was attempting to vandalise and steal electricity cables and other equipment,” IP Kayigi said.

He is currently detained at Busasamana Police station pending further investigations.

“These are acts of theft, impersonation and destruction of public infrastructure.”

He said that the suspect who is currently detained at Busasamana police station maybe be charged for both theft and impersonation after investigations are complete.

Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that anyone found guilty of theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of the penalties.

Under article 406, any person who willfully destroys or damages electric power infrastructure, among others, is liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five years and a fine of twice to ten times the value of the damaged property.

Impersonation under article 609 attracts an imprisonment of between five and seven years upon conviction, and a fine of up to Rwf3 million.
