A Health Center run by the Association of Genocide Widows, AVEGA AGAHOZO, in Rwamagana district, Eastern Rwanda, has received state-of-the-art medical equipment for screening and treating Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The equipment, worth about Rwf5 million, was donated by KCB Bank Rwanda, through its KCB Foundation during their visit to Kigabiro genocide memorial site in Rwamagana as part of the bank’s commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

The facility will provide primarily support to deal with NCDs diseases, which are prevalent in a significant portion of the population in Rwanda.

According to the World Health Organization, NCDs are one of the main causes of deaths today, with over 36 million dying annually.

The common NCDs in Rwanda are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.

The health centre will now be able to screen patients for the NCDs where early detection is usually key in finding a permanent cure.

“It is our hope that initiatives of this nature provide sustainable health solutions to the community, which will then enable them to focus on improving the quality of their lives,” George Odhiambo, Managing Director, KCB Bank Rwanda said.

He added that, “At a time when we remember those who lost their lives, it’s absolutely important that we continue to honor their legacy by creating a healthier, sustainable, and economically viable future.”

Meanwhile, KCB staff proceeded to have a “Walk to Remember” from the Kigabiro memorial site to AVEGA Health Centre in Rwamagana where they gathered and listened to testimonies from members of AVEGA as well as discussions from the local authorities.

“Rwanda’s revival will always be a lesson to the world on resilience, humanity and self-reliance,” said Odhiambo.

“We empathize with all the families that suffered this great loss and commend them for standing strong and importantly making significant progress from both a social and economic standpoint,” he added.

The Bank also contributed Rwf1 million to the funds meant to support construction works of the memorial.

The bank makes contribution and engages in different activities every year. Last year, the KCB Foundation donated Rwf2 million to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Gisozi, Nyarugenge District.
