Kagame Speaks Out Against Domestic Violence

President Paul Kagame has expressed concern about the escalating levels of domestic violence, noting that cases where wives kill husbands and vice versa are occurring within short periods after marriage.

Speaking to attendees at the Annual National Prayer Breakfast 2025 held at the Serena Hotel, he revealed that Police reports he receives show these crimes have taken on a new dimension.

Kagame emphasized that people traditionally marry to benefit each other and to have children who will inherit both family and nation. However, he expressed dismay that statistics show these marriage objectives rarely last two years, as couples begin living in discord and even killing each other.

“We must use every means possible to stop this. When you see the number of young people getting married – one 29, the other 25, or even 30 years old – still young, they didn’t marry for conflict, not to fight each other daily. They married to build a peaceful family, to have harmony and grow together,” he said.

Court records show that of the 25,481 cases received in 2023/2024, divorce cases topped the list with 2,833 files.

Kagame suggested that drug abuse might be contributing to these conflicts. Another major factor he cited is that each spouse insists their perspective is the ‘truth’ rather than showing humility toward their partner. This unwillingness to compromise leads to misunderstandings and escalating tensions.

He also addressed the poor conduct among today’s youth who post nude photos or videos of themselves, questioning what benefit they derive from this. He argued that the nudity they display on social media reflects the emptiness in their minds, asserting that such behavior should not be normalized or accepted as ordinary.

Kagame called on leaders across all sectors to work together to prevent Rwandan children from losing their values and the country from losing its Rwandan identity.

“What role do we leaders, whether religious or government, play in reducing these issues in families and beyond? Should we look away and stay silent, letting things happen as they may? What would be our purpose then? What would our responsibilities be?” he asked.

He urged leaders to understand that maintaining a peaceful country with dignified citizens is their responsibility, as well as that of every Rwandan.
