President Paul Kagame of Rwanda on Thursday held discussions with Reed Hastings the Netflix Chairman at Village Urugwiro in the capital Kigali.
According to the Presidency, the two leaders held “discussion on existing partnerships, including the recently launched initiative with Airtel Rwanda that has enabled access to affordable smartphones and data.”
It should be noted that currently up to 52,558 Rwandans have benefitted from this initiative which aims to contribute to Rwanda’s goal of ensuring universal access to digital opportunities.
The Government of Rwanda has been firmly committed to digital transformation as a key pillar for economic growth—and the movement continues at an accelerated rate.
Last Year President Paul Kagame while addressing the UN General Assembly said, “The future is digital, and transformation is happening now…” The address touched on emerging technology, AI, digital jobs, and investing in innovation.
In October, Airtel Africa in collaboration with Rwanda government introduced the country’s most affordable 4G smartphone as part of the ConnectRwanda initiative.
The goal is to provide over one million Rwandans high-speed internet access by 2024.
Priced at 20,000 Rwandan Francs (approximately U$16.50), the budget smartphone comes with a monthly plan of Frw1,000 (U$0.80) that includes 1GB of data and unlimited calls daily.
This makes connectivity more convenient and accessible across Rwanda. It also aims to bridge the digital divide by enabling users to access online services, education and economic opportunities.
It could also boost entrepreneurship, create tech jobs and promote digital literacy.
The initiative was also aided by the support of Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, underscoring how global tech leaders recognise the transformative potential of connecting underserved communities.
