Alcoholic beverages illegally brewed and without acceptable standards are classified under illegal drugs that may attract tough punishments once suspects are found manufacturing, selling and or distributing them.
Twagirayezu Jean Marie the Director General of Criminal Investigation in Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) told Journalists on Monday that suspects caught dealing in these illegal beverages may be treated as those dealing in marijuana and other narcotics.
Rwanda Investigations Bureau paraded a consignment of several types of these alcoholic drinks seized during a recent swoop operation ‘Usalama VI’ across the country and warned against one dealing in their production and distribution.
According to RIB, the rising manufacture of these beverages is because of lesser punishments and there are plans to effect a combination of heavy cash fines and prosecution of culprits.
Twagirayezu told Journalists that these contraband products currently being consumed by the population are very harmful to their health and media should also help in sensitizing the public against consumption of illegal alcoholic beverages.
