France Hosts Francophonie Summit Amidst Diminishing Influence

Leaders from more than 80 french speaking countries are gathered in Paris for a major “Francophonie” summit – the first time the event has been held in France for 33 years.

The summit comes at a time, France continues to suffer humiliating loss of influence in former colonies in Africa and other parts of the world.

Successive military coups in Mali in 2021, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Niger in 2023 saw France-friendly governments replaced by juntas who turned to Russia.

France’s influence in the Middle east has dwindled as evidenced by former protectorate Lebanon, bombed by daily Israeli forces.

The summit is using different venues. On Friday leaders gathered on Friday at a chateau in Villers-Cotterets northeast of Paris where Macron last year inaugurated a centre for the French language. On Saturday, proceedings will move to Paris.

The leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have not been invited.
The gathering is viewed by Paris government as an avenue to resolve pressing conflicts.

It is anticipated that during the summit, Macron will seek to address the disagreements between DRC and Rwanda.

According to him, the Francophonie is “a space for mediation”, “a space for dialogue to resolve political differences.”

However, during an interview, Louise Mushikiwabo, secretary general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) noted that the body has a “modest” influence.

Kinshasa accuses Kigali of supporting M23 rebels operating in eastern DRC, while Rwanda accuses DRC of supporting the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) designated by Washington as a terrorist group.

Kigali notes that DRC politicians continue to use Kigali as a scapegoat and strategy to distract from their abject failure to govern their country.
