About 62 people have died and more than 30 injured after floods swept through Kasaba, Fizi territory in South Kivu Province of Democratic Republic of Congo.
The disaster struck on Saturday in this part of South Kivu Province. The floods resulted from overflow of Lake Tanganyika and the rivers of this village.
“62 confirmed dead, an unknown number of people missing, searches continue. 150 houses destroyed and swept away, 30 people injured, including children and women,” the South Kivu provincial government said in a statement.
Meanwhile, deadly clashes between armed militia groups have been reported in the same territory triggering panic among residents.
Twirwaheno coalition, Red Tabara allied with the AFC/M23 have been clashing for three days in the Mutambala sector, Fizi territory in the province of South Kivu.
Clashes, according to witness accounts, have been taking place in Rugezi since early May 10, 2025. “The clashes started around 5 a.m.,” said a local source.
“The armed groups Twirwaheno, Android Red Tabara, allied with the AFC/M23, are clashing with the Biloze Bishambuke in the Mutambala sector. So far, heavy gunfire has been heard,” said Kelvin Bwija of the Congolese Compatriots Civil Society in Fizi.
