Let’s say they are from Europe, Asia, or any other country in the world and your best hope of watching their performance is on a screen or following them on social media.
Well, we have good news for you…
Kigali is going to be holding annual comedy events that will be bringing together the best comedians from Africa and the world to our backyards!
Most of us know that laughter is the best medicine. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires your hope, connects you to others and keeps you focused and alert.
Seka Live, an annual comedy event will bring comedians from Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda for the first edition this weekend.
The most anticipated are Eric Omondi and Chipukizzy, from Kenya, who have done numerous shows in many African countries and are currently doing comedy tours in America.
Eric Omondi, who is not a stranger to Rwandans, has performed here several times before. He wrote on his social media that comedy lovers in Kigali should come prepared for a laughter filled evening.
They will perform alongside the household names in the Rwandan comedy; Herve Kimenyi, Babu, Micheal Sengazi, George Birungi and Arthur Nkusi alongside Divi from Burundi.
Nice Budandi, the managing director of ARTN entertainment responsible for organizing Seka Live told Taarifa that the annual event will be happening every March and sooner or later it will grow to become a comedy festival that will be going on for many days.
He believes that laughter is an antidote to pain, stress and is a good way to release anger and everyone deserves a dose.
“Comedy industry in Rwanda has great potential to grow. The event will bring together many people from all over the world and it will be a learning, growing and cultural exchange platform to everyone involved.” Said Budandi.
Arthur Nkusi, Rwanda’s leading comedian said that he is positively looking forward to the Seka Live events since there is great potential for comedy in Rwanda to grow and the events; creating connections between comedians from all around.
“Rwanda’s comedy has great potential to grow and this event will open many door for many comedians here in Rwanda,” said Nkusi.
Budandi said that there will be networking opportunities and upcoming comedians will get to meet the beasts in the industry and learn from them.
This will provide an environment for knowledge and cultural exchange and people will get to learn from each other and work together.
“For the industry to develop, it does not depend on one person but many people working together. Seka Live will create a platform where everyone’s contribution is appreciated.” Explained Budandi.
The event which will start at 6pm at Serena Hotel-Kigali will feature Rwanda’s popular gospel band; Beauty for Ashes, who are doing an album tour all over Rwanda, ahead of their album launch. Their third studio album entitled ‘Renaissance’ is set to be completed in April.
