City of Kigali Launches ‘Igiti Cyanjye’ Campaign to Promote Tree Sustainability and Community Ownership

The City of Kigali, in partnership with the SUNCASA Project, launched the ‘Igiti Cyanjye’ (My Tree) campaign, a community tree-planting initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and fostering a greener city. As part of the monthly Umuganda community service, over 25,000 trees were planted across Kicukiro, Nyarugenge, and Gasabo districts, contributing to Kigali’s goal of planting three million new trees within the next five years.

The campaign encourages Kigali residents to engage in tree planting and care, emphasizing the role of individuals in creating a sustainable future. Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva highlighted the importance of community-driven environmental initiatives, stating, “Today’s Umuganda is more than a day of service; it’s a call to action… Together, we can build a sustainable, green, resilient, and vibrant city.”

This event also marked the launch of the Scaling Urban Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Climate Adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SUNCASA) project in Kigali. Led by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), with funding from Global Affairs Canada, SUNCASA aims to address climate challenges such as flood risks and soil erosion in Kigali through the restoration of critical watershed areas. The project, implemented locally by ARCOS Network, AVEGA-Agahozo, and Rwanda Young Water Professionals, is expected to support the ‘Igiti Cyanjye’ campaign through 2026 and generate over 5,000 green jobs.

Marc Manyifika, WRI’s Lead of Urban Resilience for Africa, praised Kigali’s efforts, remarking, “Kigali is setting a strong example in addressing climate challenges. Today’s tree planting is a powerful message—local actions can truly shape a sustainable future.”

Distinguished guests at the event included Rwanda’s Minister of Local Government, Dr. Mugenzi Patrice, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs from the Kingdom of Lesotho, Hon. Justice Nthomeng Majara.

For further information, residents can contact Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, Director General of Communications and Education for the City of Kigali, at 0788597423 or via email at communications@kigalicity.gov.rw.

This campaign underscores Kigali’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community ownership, demonstrating how collective action can contribute to a greener, more resilient future.
