China beleives that the only viable solution to a rift between Kinshasa government and the M23 rebel movement is through dialogue.
These remarks were made on Wednesday by Dai Bing China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations during his intervention at the special briefing at the UN on Wednesday on the security situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo..
“We call on all parties concerned to exercise restraint, resolve their differences through dialogue and consultations, and do everything within their power to defuse tensions,” said Dai Bing.
“The humanitarian crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is worsening, we call on the International Community to increase its assistance and provide sufficient resources to the humanitarian intervention plan in the Democratic Republic of Congo so as to be able to remedy to the serious situation experienced by the population,” he said.
Dai Bing expressed the hope of seeing strengthened collaboration between the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and the Mission of the Southern African Development Community in the DRC (SAMIRDC) for better support to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the restoration of peace and stability in the East.
“SADC is carrying out a peacekeeping operation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, China hopes that the SADC force will strengthen its coordination with MONUSCO and play a positive role in maintaining peace and stability in the region,” he said.
China also urges the M23 and other armed groups to immediately stop the violence and withdraw from occupied areas. According to him, the parties to the conflict must prioritize the peaceful resolution of the security crisis.
Since 2021, several parts of the North Kivu province have been under the control of these rebels. They want a direct dialogue with Kinshasa, a plan that the Tshisekedi administration rejects
He called on the International Community to help the countries of the region to promote dialogue, consultations, and to better manage conflicts and their differences in order to preserve their security.
“We welcome the mediation efforts of Burundi and Angola in particular and we welcome the press release issued by the Peace and Security Council of the African Union. The UN should remain committed to the principle of African problems and African solutions by promoting the role of the Luanda and Nairobi processes.”
