President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi on Saturday led senior government officials, and diplomats at a ceremony to commemorate the late former President Pierre Nkurunziza.
“Surrounded by the Family of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza, Senior Executives and Diplomats; the Presidential Couple laid wreaths at the Mausoleum of Former president Nkurunziza,” the Presidency said.
Nkurunziza was aged 55, when he died on 8 June 2020 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The official statement announcing Nkurunziza’s death said he was taken ill in the evening after helping out at a volleyball match in Ngozi, northern Burundi, on the same day.
He went to hospital, but appeared to be recovering the following day and was able to communicate with the people surrounding him, the government said. His condition, however, rapidly changed on Monday.
