Burera: 200 Cartons Of Polythene Bags Seized


A suspected smuggler is being held in Burera District after being intercepted on Thursday with about 200 cartons of banned plastic bags.

The Northern Region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana identified the suspect as Bosco Kamanzi, who was arrested in Mutara Village, Rwasa Cell of Gahunga Sector.

“Kamanzi was smuggling the plastic bags in a vehicle, which was stopped midway along Cyanika-Musanze highway. When officers on their routine operations searched it they recovered 200 cartons of plastic bags, which they seized and took the suspect into custody,” CIP Rugigana said.

“In most cases such illegal products are sneaked into the country through illegal borders because it would be impossible to go through the legal entry points like Cyanika.A

After crossing through porous borders they connect to the main road to board vehicles or motorcycle,” he explained.

He, however, added that the good working relations between the Police and the general public help to know such people through information sharing.

“The law is very clear; plastic bags are banned in Rwanda and that’s why it falls in the Police responsibilities and usual operations to arrest anyone found smuggling, selling or using them,” Rugigana said.

Rwanda abolished the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags in 2008 due the threat they pose to the environment.
