From the quiet volcanic soils below the mountains of Musanze and Nyabihu districts, one can see farmers tending to their rare patchouli plant (pagostemon cabli).
Little do these farmers know that they are actually tending to a major source of ingredients that are vital in the production of high quality natural scent fragrants.
On Wednesday evening, Aqua Rwanda launched a meticulously packaged perfume produced from locally grown Patchouli.
The fragrance is green, refreshing and very natural. The heart of the essence is a green fruity bouquet, light but deep, full of passion fruit and mango nectar, redcurrant and the vivid smell of the rain-forest.
The musky dry-down marries the woody opulence of red sandalwood and Made In Rwanda patchouli.
Emmanuel Hategeka Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Rwanda Development Board could not hide his excitement about the new Made In Rwanda product hitting the market shelves.

Enrico Lalia Morra is Honorary Consul of the Republic of Rwanda in Milano. He was also present at the launching event held at Kigali Heights.
However, this is not the first perfume made from Rwanda’s Patchouli plant.
The 7virtues is also selling Patchouli of Rwanda Eau de Parfum which is found in various retail giants across the world. It is sold in the range of $70.00 – $110.00.
This product is available for customers in the EU and the UK from Amazon Luxury.
The 7virtues says they work with “our supplier Nicholas Hitimana of Ikirezi who has mobilized co-operatives in Rwanda to empower farmers to own and rebuild their communities.”
“Our farmers earn 2.5 times the income of the next crop of coffee. Each farmer is also given a cow for milk, cheese and each new heifer is given to their neighbour to continue empowering one another,” says The 7virtues.
