Airtel Africa has signed a landmark agreement with SpaceX to deliver Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to customers across the continent.
The partnership aims to enhance digital inclusion by extending reliable connectivity to even the most remote parts of Africa.
According to a statement released today, Starlink has already secured operating licenses in 9 of the 14 countries where Airtel Africa operates, with applications in progress for the remaining five.
The collaboration is set to significantly bolster Airtel Africa’s next-generation satellite connectivity offerings for enterprises, small businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities in underserved communities.
The agreement also includes plans to expand rural network coverage through cellular backhauling, which uses satellite infrastructure to support mobile communications in areas lacking traditional broadband.
Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa, emphasized the importance of the partnership in achieving the company’s broader mission. “We remain deeply committed to our vision to enrich the lives of people of Africa,” Taldar said.
“This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step to demonstrate our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships.”
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, highlighted the significance of the agreement in supporting Starlink’s mission in Africa. “We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways,” Gibbs said.
“The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering across Africa makes great sense for our business.”
Starlink, which is already present in over 20 African markets, is rapidly expanding its reach through collaborations with major regional telecom players like Airtel.
Both companies indicated that they will continue exploring further initiatives to deepen digital access and leverage Airtel’s extensive ground infrastructure to enhance Starlink’s regional footprint.
The partnership marks a significant stride toward bridging Africa’s digital divide and promises to unlock new opportunities for socio-economic development across the continent.
